DAZN vs. WOW: sport streaming in direct comparison

Sport as core business, two opposing models: DAZN and WOW are the two most important sport streaming platforms in Germany. Both fight for the same audience, sports-minded households with high willingness to pay. The strategy behind them could hardly be more different: DAZN relies on global rights breadth and a growing advertising business. WOW combines sport with entertainment content, and faces a strategic turning point.

  • DAZN: largest sports rights breadth in the German market, Bundesliga conference, Champions League, NFL, FIFA Club World Cup, boxing, MMA, tennis. Advertising revenues rose 80% year on year in 2025, the platform is growing into its maturity phase.
  • WOW: Sky as a hybrid platform, Bundesliga Friday/Saturday, 2. Bundesliga, Premier League, Formula 1 combined with a series and film offering. Prices were raised significantly in 2025.
  • Biggest news: RTL Group takes over Sky Deutschland. In June 2025, RTL Group confirmed it would take over Sky Deutschland including WOW for the DACH region, which should integrate WOW into the RTL ecosystem and the Ad Alliance marketing logic in the medium term.

What are DAZN and WOW?

DAZN launched in Germany in 2016 and was conceived from the start as a pure sport streaming service, without entertainment ballast, without a linear TV legacy. Through aggressive rights purchases, the platform has developed into the most important sport streaming address in Germany. In 2025, DAZN broadcasts all 63 matches of the FIFA Club World Cup free of charge for the first time, a reach statement that brings new audiences onto the platform.

WOW is the streaming product of Sky Deutschland, which emerged from Sky Ticket in 2021 as a standalone app without Sky Q hardware. WOW combines sport with an extensive series and film offering and was, until the launch of HBO Max in January 2026, also the home of HBO content in Germany. The announced takeover by RTL Group is the most strategically significant development of recent times.

Pricing model: direct comparison

DAZN is cheaper in the sport-only segment, Super Sports for 19.99 EUR on an annual subscription compared with WOW's Live Sport for 29.99 EUR. In the all-in-one area, both are level. With the series-and-films package from 5.58 EUR, WOW has an entry point that DAZN structurally does not offer.

Content: rights breadth versus rights depth

DAZN wins on breadth: Bundesliga conference (Saturday), Champions League, NFL, Serie A, LaLiga, boxing, MMA, tennis, darts. No other service bundles so many international sports rights. Its strength lies in complementarity: anyone who consumes several sports finds everything on one platform.

WOW wins on the depth of the German top leagues: all Bundesliga matches Friday and Saturday including the top game, all 2. Bundesliga matches, Premier League and Formula 1. The package targets fans who want to cover the German Bundesliga completely, without needing DAZN.

Advertising: DAZN grows, WOW in transition

DAZN has built a standalone, growing advertising business. Live sports events as a campfire moment with collective attention are the advertising argument. DAZN markets sponsorships, in-stream advertising and CTV placements directly.

WOW faces a transformation on the advertising side: with the RTL takeover, WOW inventory will in perspective be integrated into the Ad Alliance marketing structure, which would fundamentally upgrade WOW as an advertising platform. Bundesliga Friday and Saturday marketed via Ad Alliance would be a considerable gain for the RTL ecosystem.

Conclusion: competitors today, ecosystem partners tomorrow?

Today DAZN and WOW fight for the same high-paying sports audience, with DAZN as the clear winner in rights breadth and WOW with the Bundesliga depth and the entertainment hybrid advantage. If we factor in the RTL takeover of Sky Deutschland, the picture changes: WOW would become part of the same ecosystem as RTL+, with NFL on RTL+ and Bundesliga on WOW, marketed via a shared Ad Alliance infrastructure. A duopoly in German sport streaming.
